Panama Canal Transit on Briet

Yacht Briet (34', or is she 32'?), owned & skippered by Duco Pulle, was a great substitute for Serengeti (75') to transit the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The story of this trip is dedicated to the memory of Phyllis Macay, one of our crew members, who was tragically killed by Somali pirates on 22-Feb-2011. Phyllis, a fun-loving and extrovert American lady, died while still pursuing her dreams.

  • The raft of three yachts was far too far to one side of the lock (see the middle of the lock gates in this photo) putting huge strain on the stern rope on the port side. <br />
The result is the cleat is wrenched out of the deck and is catapulted across the lock hitting the side and landing in the water (see the splash it made in the photo!). We moved rapidly to starboard and the furtherest away yacht just missed hitting the lock wall before the rope was re-secured to the stern of the big catamaran in the centre of the 'raft' (which is where it should have been fastened to in the first place)

  • We're really far over in this Panama Canal lock. We're at an angle and there are two 'rafted' yachts to our starboard including the large catamaran in the centre
